The last time we discussed markets in the CIS region (Test equipment in CIS region, 19/12/2011) it attracted an extraordinary amount of attention being among one of the most read pages on the signpost since this blog was instituted in early 2009. This item looks at the market in broadly the same area but looks at a different segment, that of electric drives.

The demand for industrial automation, rising energy costs and improved understanding of the advantages of electric drives will encourage their uptake across Eastern Europe, Russia and CIS over 2012-2016.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan , “Electric Drives in Eastern Europe, Russia and CIS Market”, finds that the market earned revenues of €355.2 million ($472.5 m) in 2011 and estimates this to reach €492.2 million ($652.1 m) in 2016. The research covers Alternative Current (AC), Direct Current (DC) and Servo Drives. AC drives are the largest product segment in the market.

“Industrial automation helps optimise manufacturing processes, improve plant performance and reduce operational costs,” explained Frost & Sullivan Industrial Automation & Process Control (IPC) Research Analyst Maryna Osipova. “AC drives and servo drives are key components of advanced machines that help end users achieve such goals and sustain competitiveness on a global scale.”

Servo drives and AC drives maximise the cost-efficiency of production and reduce the operating costs of industrial processes. These types of drives are used in different frequency applications, and demonstrate superior energy performance.

Rising energy costs too are pressuring end users to enhance their energy-efficiency. This is training the spotlight on electric drives that support better energy performance.

“In eastern Europe, electric drives are perceived as one of the best methods to save energy,” explained Osipova. “The use of advanced electric drives has the potential to reduce energy consumption by 25 to 50 per cent.”

However, the high corruption index of CIS countries and Russia and the limited development of the private sector are impeding market development. Moreover, economic and political instability dampen the level of government and foreign investments.

“To successfully confront these challenges and limit the risks of establishing business in these regions, electric drives suppliers need to have a comprehensive understanding of the prevailing micro-environment,” advised Osipova. “On a positive note, anticipated anti-corruption legislation and reduced red-tapism are set to create a more conducive environment for private sector participation.”


Moderate growth for field process instruments

The worldwide market for Process  Field Instruments will grow at an average annual rate of about 5  percent from 2010 through 2015 according to the most recent forecast update of Process Instrumentation and Automation markets conducted by  the Global Foresight Group™.

Process field instruments include all key pressure, temperature, flow  and level instruments.

In 2010, North America accounted for  approximately 30 percent of the total market demand for process field instruments, while Europe (EU) was 23 percent.  BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) made up another 19 percent of the
demand.  All other countries provided the remainder.

BRIC countries will provide the highest growth rates for these  instruments in the forecast period.  This will continue the decline  of the North American and European market shares.

The International Society of Automation (ISA) has announced the winners of the 2010 ISA Educational Foundation Scholarships. These scholarships are awarded to college and university students who demonstrate outstanding potential for long-range contribution to the fields of automation, instrumentation, and control. The scholarship awards support tuition and related expenses and research activities and initiatives.

ISA awarded more than $62,000, which was distributed among students in two- and four-year colleges and universities, and graduate students. Contributions to the ISA Educational Foundation come from the following sources: Norman E. Huston Endowment, the Paros-Digiquartz Fund, the Bob and Mary Ives Endowment, the Wilbanks scholarship, the ISA Chemical and Petroleum Industries Division Endowment, the ISA Food and Pharmaceutical Industries Division Endowment, the ISA Executive Board Scholarship, ISA Life Members Committee Scholarship, ISA Section and District Scholarships, and the General Education Fund.
